There are about 9 riddles Bilbo and Gollum played. Riddles about mountain, teeth, wind, sun on the daisies, dark, eggs, fish, and time. They are all interesting and difficult for me, I think. Well, which riddle do you like the best?
Actually, I like the one about time. It’s like this; “This thing all things devours: Birds, beasts, trees, flowers; Gnaws iron, bites steel; Grinds hard stones to meal; Slays king, ruins town, And beats high mountain down.” It means a thing which can eat anything no matter animals or giants or plants or even iron or steel. It can also kill king, ruin town, and break high mountains down. Of course the answer is “time”. Time can solve anything including lives. Time can make every living things such as birds, beasts, trees, flowers die, make iron and steel rusted, make king be old until he die, and make mountains fall apart. I couldn’t find the answer at first but after I knew the answer, I could truly understand and was happy to know the answer. I like this riddle the best because I like the answer---time. I think it is a riddle which was made so good. The writer---Tolkien is so clever to make such a nice riddle.
I think the way Bilbo got the answer was interesting too. He wanted to say “Give me more time! Give me time!” when he saw that Gollum came to him, but he was too scared and the word he only could say was “Time! Time!”. I think that’s very interesting and Bilbo is often really lucky.
