It was the first time for me to visit a nursing home. The first thing I thought when we arrived there was “it’s a bit smaller than I imagined, but it’s clean!!” I think a good clean quiet environment is very important for elder people to live comfortably.
Our partner was Mrs. Peng and her roommates. We tried our best to be nice and to be friends with them. She was so smart that she could understand all of our questions. She looked happy when she talked about her children and her experiences. Although sometimes I couldn’t understand her half-Shanghainese language, I think I was still not active enough to talk to her. And also, I realized that acknowledging is very important so that the speaker can feel comfortable and glad to talk.
She said the most difficult thing when she was a little bit younger, was money. Her children needed money because they had to go to college, she and her husband needed money because they had to collect money for when they get old. She also said that when she was a child, or a teenager, she hasn’t had a dream!! That really surprised me. All she was thinking was to live and to go to school and getting married! After hearing that, I think we are all having so nice and convenient and easy life compared to hers. We are lucky to have what we have now. We should we should cherish all the things in our lives, and work hard to make them better.
And also, I learned communicating with elder people is good for all both of us and them. We have to take care of them when they need help. I hope I can talk more when I visit the nursing home next time.
