The sculpture is called Self-Made-Man as the man has a hammer and a nail in his hands, sculpturing himself. He is very strong, as we can see from his rigid muscles. He is not afraid at all to carve the original stone down in order to shape himself, because he looks so determined raising his right hand with the hammer up so high.
First, the expression on his face is really serious and concentrating, showing he is very determined to build a better-looking body. His right hand is risen up very high in order to use his full power. His left hand with a nail is precisely pointing at a spot where he’s going to dig in next move. His eyes are fixed to the nail, making sure the point he’s going to hit. The background sky is blue and several clouds are floating. This may represent freedom, since sky is a symbol of freedom and absence of limitation.
This statue embodies the idea of the American Dream, as the man is probably a no one (has no wealth or great background) who works hard by himself to become a person he wants to be. The crucial characteristics of a self-made man defined by me are humble beginnings, being independent, hard work, and achievement. This sculpture fits all the standards. He was just a piece of rough rock. He had to start shaping himself from nothing but a hard, irregularly shaped rock. No one is there to help him, and sculpturing himself must be so hard and painful. But he will overcome the hardship without giving up and eventually finish the work successfully.
The concept of the self-made man is important to the American Dream because the dream itself is about ones can be successful if they worked hard enough, no matter who they are or what they have. Without these characteristics, it cannot be called American Dream.
