A hobbit question again… OK, let me answer it.
In chapter 11, they left the village and continued their journey to fight the dragon. According to the book, “They spent a cold and lonely night and their spirits fell.”(Page 219), “There was no laughter or song or sound of harps,” (Page 220). We can know that the spirits they got in the village is disappearing. They’re uneasy, nervous and afraid. So the mood is nervous and sad too.
They began to find the secret door. But as the book says, “Day by day they came back to their camp without success.”(Page 223) they don’t have so much time and they cannot find it out so they were so tired but nervous. The mood became low too.
Then Bilbo and Kili and Fili found the secret hidden door, but they forgot about rune-letters on Thorin’s map so they could not open it. When the sun sank before Bilbo explained, “The dwarves groaned,” (Page 228) so we can see that the dwarves’ tone is so impatient. I felt impatient then too. But finally Bilbo found out the way to open it from the black bird as a hint.
Anyway, I think the tone and the mood are related. Reader will feel something similar with the characters feel. And the mood of chapter 11 is disappointment, nervous, and impatient.
